One good way to select a publisher is to take a look at ones which publish
your favorite books. Contact them. It is very important to ask for guidelines. Their needs might have changed since the publication of your old favorite books. Currently, they might have too many books in one category and they are only looking for books in a different category. Some publishers no longer accept unsolicited manuscripts.
On my other site, Breezy Bits - An Author's Homepage, there is a page titled, Writing Children's Stories. I discuss taking the first steps for getting a children's book published. These are some of the questions which are addressed.
These questions and others are covered in my book, A Basic Guide to Writing, Selling, and Promoting Children's Books: Plus Information about Self-publishing. Click on the title to order from Amazon.com or order from my site's order form to save time and money. One of the largest new trends in publishing is self-publishing especially among educators. The best selling self-published books are inspirational, how-to, or motivational. For many tips and for the most extensive list of children's book publishers, invest in the most current edition of The Children's Authors and Illustrators' Market. The Writer's Market has many tips and they list publishers for children and adults. Be sure to use the current edition. Another good book is How to Get Your Teaching Ideas Published : A Writer's Guide to Educational Publishing by Jean Stangl. |

The Authors and Illustrators for Children Webring has many sites with free advice and other resources for authors and illustrators. Below are some of the textbook and self-help publishers who have websites. At the time of this posting, all of these still accept unsolicited manuscripts. Be sure to read the publisher's guidelines carefully. If these aren't posted on the site, contact the publisher. Ask for guidelines and a sample catalog.
