Educational Books

Working as a school psychologist and as a school counselor in elementary schools, I was concerned about many children in kindergarten through third grade who had poor learning habits. Most materials about how to learn begin at the fourth grade level.

Patterns of failure, poor study skills, and failure identity can be well established by fourth grade. My first book, Little Lemon: Activities for Developing Motivation and Memory Skills, provides early intervention by addressing that need with a fictional story, puppets, music, discussion questions, and lesson plans. See some of the text and pictures. On the same page, you can see excerpts from two other Little Lemon books.
Whoa Wiggle-worm: a Little Lemon Book about an Overly Active Child
A Purple Cow: How to Learn Colors

The subject of my master's thesis was Similarities-differences Concept Formation Training in Culturally Deprived Pre-school Children in Wake County, NC. Differences are more easily noticed than similarities. Both are needed for reading readiness skills, recognizing verb endings and their root words, etc. See Similarities - Differences Training and Other Activities with Dolch Sight Words.

The Dolch books were created in response to the popularity of the Dolch activities which I have on my site.

My educational background includes these degrees plus numerous workshops, conferences, certification renewal courses, etc.

BA in Psychology, Columbia College, Columbia, SC
MS in Guidance (Psychology Minor), NCSU, Raleigh, NC
Certificate in Vocational Rehabilitation, UWV, Institute, WV
Ed. S. in School Psychology, GSU, Statesboro, GA

Practicum for MS
This was at Wright School in Durham, NC, which was established in 1963 as part of Project Re-ED, a National Institute of Mental Health demonstration project created by Nicholas Hobbs, Ph.D. Today's psychoeducational centers were established from this model.

Internship for Ed. S. in School Psychology
This was in the Camden County School System, GA.

I've worked in school systems in NC and GA and in mental health and rehabilitation facilities in NC.

Writing Book and Fiction

Many people have used my writing book and the free information on my Breezy Bits site to learn how to get their teaching ideas published.

I wrote A Basic Guide to Writing, Selling, and Promoting Children's Books: Plus Information about Self-publishing as a text for a college class which I teach. For many years, I've been a published member of The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. My books include educational books and books which are just for fun. See excerpts from each of my books.

My other writer's resources have been moved to Breezy Bits - an Author's Home Page.

Visit my site for children, Bits about Horses.

I enjoyed writing a book about riding the waves at the beach and pretending that they are 10,000 White Horses. This is available in English and in Spanish.

Other books of fiction include Cuckoo and The Buggy That Boogied Away.
