Thumbs Up for a Second Language!
Tips for Teaching

by Natty Cruz-Torres
Third Grade Teacher in Ponce, Puerto Rico

¿Cuál es tu nombre? ¿Cómo estás? ¿Dónde vives? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿De dónde provienes?
These are simple questions. Can you answer them?

Learning a second language is very important. As a teacher, I believe that all students should be given the opportunity of learning two or more languages when they are young. Kids who learn a second language will increase their awareness of other cultures. They can share with others because they understand their neighbors. Think about it. How do little kids approach their surroundings? Teaching a second language is a challenge for teachers and parents. We can use many educational tools, but it’s very important that the kids practice every day. The practice needs to be frequent and fun.

What can we do to help our children learn a second language?
Here are some things you can do.

    Read to your child.
    Keep your child motivated.
Be a model. Participate in cultural events.
    Enhance lessons with different games.
Sing with your kids. Listen to a sing-along tape in the car.
    Explore poetry with your child.
    Use flash cards with pictures.
    Label house furniture.
Provide bilingual books and dictionaries (preferably with translations side by side).
Use bilingual videos and turn on the Closed Captioned on TV.
Practice language skills every day. (Be sure that the practice is frequent and fun.)

Remember, work with your child and keep in touch with your child's teacher. Don’t forget, learning a second language is part of a good education. Individual and professional progress is closely related to the ability to learn, understand, speak, and write a second language. Are you ready? I invite you to share with your kids the joy of learning a second language.

What is your name? How are you? Where do you live? Where are you from? Where are you from?

Need to Learn a Second Language

by Betsy B. Lee
Site Owner of Learning Abilities Books

We need to remember the old expression: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

We are accepted more quickly in a new country when we learn the customs and language of any country where we choose to live. We are able to talk better with our children's teachers. Our children will have greater learning abilities if they know the language of the new country.

It is harder to learn a new language as we become older. Many parents and children use these children's books to help them learn basic English. The Dolch books have been used for ESL instruction for many different languages. Be sure to see the lesson plans about vocabulary and spelling. Close those windows to return to this page.

We need to be well-informed. We need to comprehend the newspapers, TV, radio, and so forth. We need to know more than one point of view. We need to keep people from taking advantage of us.

In The United States, non-English speaking people have very limited information about their rights and about politics. Some politicians love that idea! They are eager to "help" by telling them how to vote. If someone wants to limit our access to information in our new country, we need to question their motives. Remember, "When in Rome...!"
