glass of lemonade If school work is a lemon, "make lemonade" with learning strategies! Learning strategies are similar to study skills but the term implies more involvement from the learner. A strategy is like a game plan for winning.
  1. Spread your fingers our with thumbs close together. (Let's say the problem is: 9 x 4=__ )
  2. Starting with your pinky of your left hand, count out four. (pinky=1, ring finger=2, middle finger=3, pointer=4)
  3. Fold down the finger that the number lands on. (In the example's case, fold down your pointer finger)
  4. The fingers to the left of the folded finger is the ten's place, and the fingers to the right is the one's place. (EX: We have 3 fingers to the left, and 6 fingers to the right; therefore, our answer is 36) To go from your left hand to your right hand, the counting would be 5 for the left thumb, and 6 for the right thumb.

If you would like to share your experiences of using learning strategies, send an email to Learning Abilities Books (contactlab(AT)gate.net and replace AT with the @ sign). It will be considered for this site, and you'll be contacted if it is posted. Please include the learner's age or grade level, a brief description of the strategy, and how it was useful.  The strategy could be one you used as a child or one you used to help a child become a strategic learner.  Please send strategies which can be used with children who are fifth graders or younger.  Many of these strategies are useful throughout adulthood.  Include some or all of the following:

    Your name:
    Site name:(optional)
    URL:(optional)
    Strategy Name: optional
    Learner's age or grade level:
Description: This may be a short paragraph or a detailed lesson plan.

If you wish to contribute, here are some special “handy hints.” Originality of the concept is not necessary. Children tend to benefit most from tried and true methods.  With regard to copyright, remember there are no copyrights on ideas and titles.  There are copyrights on the selection and arrangement of words used to express ideas and on images.  So, the strategy itself does not have to be one you invented. Just use your own words to share what it is and how it helped.
If you've found a beneficial resource which you'd like to share, please send an email to Learning Abilities Books (contactlab(AT)gate.net and replace AT with the @ sign). The resource will be considered for the bookstore or for hotlinks. For books, be sure to include the author's name as well as the title. For inclusion on this site, books need to be currently in-print titles carried by Amazon.com.
Encourage others to read excellent books by writing your online review at the Amazon.com Website. Each book's page at Amazon.com presents the opportunity to write a customer review.
