Children today need more exercise. This can be an emotional and physical release for any child. Overly active children benefit from focused activity such as exercise. For children who are not overly active, exercise can help prevent and treat diabetes and other serious conditions. Too many children spend hours sitting at computers, TV's, etc.
after spending hours sitting at school and sitting on the school bus. Exercise for the eye muscles and the mouse finger is fine but children need toys and activities which call for more action. (This is one of the recommendations in Whoa Wiggle-worm: A Little Lemon Book about an Overly Active Child.) How about throwing and chasing? Balls are inexpensive and children love them. A five or ten minute workout of tossing a ball or even a balloon can be an enjoyable, bonding experience between parents and children. We don't need to keep score. Just have fun. Many children learn to get ready for school more quickly by a five minute game of tossing a ball with a parent. They are told, "If you get ready in time, we'll play ball for a few minutes." (Avoid promising a certain amount of time or a certain number of times.) If time is running a little short, remember that most small kids have no idea if we spend five minutes or three minutes. How much time do we spend saying, "Hurry up!" If the toys on this page don't meet your child's needs, you might like to see Toys for Differently Abled Kids on the Amazon.com site. Close that window to return to this site. A guide to categories makes it easier to find the right fit between your child's abilities and stimulating toys that will promote development. Browse auditory, creativity, fine motor, gross motor, language, self-esteem, social skills, tactile, thinking, and visual. The need for exercise is addressed in the book, Whoa Wiggle-worm.
