Frustrating Fonts

The hand printed "g" and "a" are different from the typical typed "g" and "a." Some fonts show no difference in the lower case "l (L)" and the capital "I (i)."

Different fonts can cause problems for beginnning readers or older struggling readers. We need to determine if a reader has problems in this area. Until readers easily recognize words, we need to be cautious about inconsistency of fonts in books and on the computer. Simply changing the default setting on the computer can help. Visual memory and recognition of similarities and differences can be strengthened with flash cards. Creating short sentences is one effective use of flash cards.

This site has Dolch flash cards using three distinctive fonts.

  1. This text is in the Comic Sans MS font which represents hand printed letters. Notice "g" and "a."
  2. This text is in the Times New Roman font which represents typical typed letters. This is like elite type. Elite was one of the first fonts used by typewriters and printing presses. It is still used frequently. Notice "g" and "a."
  3. This text is in the Arial font. It is often the default font for Word programs and email. Notice the lower case "l (L)" and the capital "I (i)."

Use Dolch flash cards to compare three fonts.

  1. On this site, all Dolch word flash cards are in Comic Sans MS.
  2. Compare the Comic Sans MS cards with cards in Times New Roman for Dolch words containing "g" and "a."
  3. Compare the Comic Sans MS cards with cards in Arial for Dolch words with the lower case "l (L)" and the capital "I (i)."

It can be helpful to let children experiment on the computer with the same words in different fonts.

Many students improve visual memory for reading and for spelling with the help of Achieve: A Visual Memory Program.
