The hand printed "g" and "a" are different from the typical typed "g" and "a." Some fonts show no difference in the lower case "l (L)" and the capital "I (i)." Different fonts can cause problems for beginnning readers or older struggling readers. We need to determine if a reader has problems in this area. Until readers easily recognize words, we need to be cautious about inconsistency of fonts in books and on the computer. Simply changing the default setting on the computer can help. Visual memory and recognition of similarities and differences can be strengthened with flash cards. Creating short sentences is one effective use of flash cards.
